Dash cam captures drunk driver’s final moments on deadly drive, kills cyclist and himself<br/>The dangers of reckless drink-driving were recently captured in two shocking consecutive incidents on a car’s dashboard camera in Liaocheng, east China’s Shandong Province recently. While driving in a heavily intoxicated state, the video shows the drunk driver hitting a man on a tricycle, killing him. Instead of stopping at the scene to report the accident to the police, the driver sped off while talking to a friend on the phone about the accident at the same time.
1500 meters later, the intoxicated driver was killed on impact, as he lost control of the car, crashed into a tree and plunged into a roadside ditch. According to an investigation by traffic police, the driver's blood alcohol content (BAC) level was as high as 300mg/100ml, fifteen times higher than the legal limit.
In 2011 China introduced new laws to combat drink-driving, by stipulating that the legal limit was 20mg/100ml. Any driver caught with a BAC between 20mg/100ml and 80mg/100ml can be punished by a fine between 1000-2000 yuan and a six month license suspension. Drivers with a BAC over 80mg/100ml can face a prison sentence of up to three years along with a five year driving ban, while drink-drivers who cause serious injury or death face much longer prison sentences and lifetime driving bans.
However drink driving has continued to be a big problem after the tough new laws were introduced. China Daily reported that over four days of the 2014 Spring Festival holiday, there were more than 800 cases reported nationwide of people driving under the influence of alcohol.
